I bought this phone for my 70+ year old mother who has up til now refused to use a cell phone. She was going on vacation and I wanted to make sure that she would be able to stay in contact in case of an emergency. She has always resisted getting a phone because of the confusing contracts and the expense. Also, she is content to be out of contact and not have her children "checking up on her" all the time.
I was skeptical about whether she would use it but surprise surprise... she loves it. She is happy to be able to buy minutes as needed and be able to stay in contact when she wants. This phone was the best choice because it is a flip phone so she does not have to worry about it turning on in her purse or whether she has ended her call. The buttons are suitable for her fingers and the numbers show up large on the screen so it is easy to see what you dialed. Also, it is so small and light, it fits in her purse or her pocket very nicely- even with the case I got. I love knowing that she has a way to call for help if she is out and about or to call for a taxi if needed because payphones are getting rare and cell phones are a necessity in my opinion. In addition, the phone seems to hold a charge well and the service areas were plentiful and great sound. The few times I noticed reduced coverage, I just moved a few feet and I was back to multiple bars and my mother had no problems making her calls.
Phone is also easy to use. Clearly shows the caller on the display even with the phone closed. And, if it rings, press green to answer and red to end the call. That's all you really need to know.
Anyway, there were a few minor cons to this phone: the navigation buttons (arrows) were a little sensitive and you had to be careful when using these and often while I was programming me and my siblings into my mom's contact list, I had to go back and redo. No big deal but this might be frustrating to my mother if one of us is not around to program the phone for her (not a problem). Also, the menu is not the easiest thing for an older person who has resisted technology to navigate. I was able to show mom the basics like how to get her messages and how to check the minutes left and how to find contacts (sort of) but changing the ring tones and finding the calculator will not be happening. And, the construction felt a little lesser quality. When I dropped the phone, the back cover popped off but is did go back on easily and it did not just come off when handling. I really had to press on it to get it off when I actually tried so I guess it is sturdy enough for an older person who will leave it in her purse. I would not recommend it for an active teenager who would be putting it in a pocket repeatedly and being alot rougher with the handling.
All in all this is a great phone and service for someone who may be an occasional user and who wants the lowest rate with no contract hassles. Very easy to navigate the basic features of making and answering calls. True, this phone is no frills but not everyone cares about a camera and email on their phone. You cannot beat 10 cents a minute with no daily fees. And if you purchase additional minutes on the net 10 website, there were a few offers that made the minutes even cheaper (slightly). And, unlike some phones and services that are geared toward older people, this service does not charge your credit card each month and you have the freedom to use as many minutes as you need to whenever you want since more minutes are just a purchase away adn you are not charged a higher rate per minute for using more than the plan allows.
And... mom called me from the airport where she changed planes to let me know her plane had a delay; she called to tell me when she landed; when she went out, she called the taxi service that she preferred to use instead of being forced to use the only one (less desirable to her) that was present; on vacation, she called my sister to tell her that she was talking to her from the beach; she called her own sister to tell her that she finally had a cell phone; and when we went shopping at an outdoor outlet mall, she went to one store while I went to another and she called me to let me know that she was not waiting for me and was going to go to check out another store and told me to call her when I was finished in line. Success!!
ONE YEAR LATER: Phone is still operational, battery still holds a good charge and Mom still loves it. She is still not a regular user and won't text (even though phone will do this for 5 cents per text) but she keeps it in her purse for emergencies and uses it a few times a week. It is the perfect no frills phone for someone who does not have heavy usage.
