OtterBox Case for Nokia E72 Review

Using my e71 for over a year without a case, it got quite dinged up (adds character?). So, when I plunked down $3xx for an e72, I figured a case would be a good idea. I wanted something durable and good-looking, with a great fit. So, over 2 months ago, I bought this otter box 3-pc case (screen protector film, flex silicone encasement, & hard plastic outer shell). The reviews looked good (thanks for the info, guys!) and I liked the idea of both a soft shock-absorbing part, as well as a hard part for durability (didn't realize it came with a screen film until it arrived).
PROS:
- 3-piece case fulfills my protection requirements (hard & squishy w/screen coverage)
- fits around my e72 snugly, no gaps, etc. When it's on, it actually looks like part of the phone, not a case.
- not TOO bulky (some girth tho, which may make the phone easier to hold for people with bigger hands - mine are smaller)
- most functions accessible with case on (see note below about headset port & audio)
- looks high-quality, not junky (IMHO)
CONS:
- when the case is on, callers often comment on poor audio quality (not when the case is off)
- even tho I have appropriately-lengthed nails, sometimes, it's challenging to get the "plugs" unlatched for the charger & the headset ports (probably keeps out dust & moisture well, if that's a concern for you).
- the "plug" that goes into the headphone jack is long and makes the phone register that there is something there that needs to be tended to (it will ask me if there is a headset, music stand, etc. when I put the silicone "plug" in, but not when unlatched, or when the case is off)
- also when the case is on, the default headset that came with my phone does not "sit" fully in the port, so the headset connection is often "lost" mid-call, and I'm left to frantically switch to loudspeaker mid-sentence. Obvi, if I'm using the headset, then usually my hands are busy doing other things and "fixing" the connection is quite a hassle. I think this is due to the case being too thick at that point, or the hole for the jack isn't big enough to seat my headset connector. Again, when the case is off, no problems with this whatsoever.
- the silicone "patch" that sticks out from the back doesn't really stick out enough to grip (as another reviewer mentioned). When my phone gets hot, sometimes this part does puff out a little, but doesn't really do anything to aid grippy-ness on a smooth, sloped surface.
- no rear camera-lens protection
- loss of access to the wrist-strap holes (with the case on, without a mod - I don't use the wrist-strap, but might be important feature to others)
- it only comes in black (I know this is a personal choice, but, in a world full of black devices, it is a minor con for me...I loved my white e71)
For a case that was obviously so smartly designed and well-manufactured in certain areas, it is unfortunately quite poorly designed and/or manufactured in other, very important areas. Some reviewers seem to have similar issues, while others seem to have no issues.
I've been tempted to return or exchange it (maybe I got a bad one?), but in my search to replace it, I haven't been able to find another case that has the high durability and design factor (overall) of this case. I could also mod the case, but at this price, I really shouldn't need to be trimming and cutting and taking the risk of damaging the function or polish of this otherwise fine-looking case.
I hate to be the first 2-star review, and I hesitated for a while to even mention these issues, but in my experience, the cons (which are mostly function-based) really outweigh the pros (which are mostly aesthetic-based). Yes, it seems to protect the device body from life's little dents & dings, but if I can't use the *phone* effectively to make/receive calls while the case is on, then the fact that there's protection becomes alot less relevant.
I rely on reviews here at Amazon to help me make informed buying choices. I hope this review has helped you in the same manner. If you voted this as helpful, I Thank You! :)
