(More customer reviews)-Best functional dash cam currently on the market(and I've researched tons from the web and BrickHouseSecurity) - especially for the price. Basically this is a heavily trimmed down version of what many police agencies, buses, delivery companies, etc. use (like FedEx - they use a $2,000 4 camera version with DVR)
-Practical because it is portable(except the gps mount that 3M heavy duty tape makes it stay on the vehicle - hence, you can't use this really for rental cars. You can 'forcibly' use it on 'rental' cars if you place it on a sticky dash mat and have the dash side camera facing out with in car camera facing down, but it's realllly hard.
-Only way to remove 3M tape is by using a small knife and slowly cut around the edges. Hence, it's important to find a good spot on your windshield - and that's a tough job by itself. My recommendation is to start recording without mounting, then check if the view is appropriate on your computer(comes with a very nice Viewer program)
-Run out of 3M Heavy Duty Tape? Home Depot has it.
-Yes, 400 dollars is still expensive for bascially two CCTV type cameras placed in a little 'box' - but unless you want to start mounting pinhole type cameras on your car - permenantly, with lots of wires flying around and a dvr machine somewhere - go ahead. But this is only product out there that can cover 90% frontal view(you lose about 10% of left windshield when placed on standard right hand side inner windshield) and nearly all 3/4 side car view(your big head will block out the driver rear seat window(4 door car)and provides a good glimpse of the rear view.
-Remember the view of the sides only catches glimpses of cars passing by. There are no cameras that actually point toward the side windows. It's just that the interior camera has an ultra wide angle view.
-During optimal horizon of the sun(especially sunset), the sun will render your frontal view nearly useless. (unless you stop driving toward the sun's direction)
-The frontal view camera has no IR(that blows), the interior view does. The interior night vision works good but you have to make sure your lens are clean - if not the view will be smeary at night.....purchase kim wipes. Although the frontal view has no IR - as long there is light out there(street lights, etc)it is fine. If you are in, let's say, a dark warehouse, with only your headlights on - then the frontal view will only show what the headlights can show....... Also catching license plates at nighttime - forget about it. Especially when your headlights refracts white light only back to the camera.
-You can try buying a mini IR device and attach to windshield, but not sure if angles will allow it to complement this dash cam.
-Catching license plates during the day is nearly impossible too.
-It is stated that the interior IR won't work if you try using it as frontal view so, if you were thinking about that - don't. Also, you won't be able to mount it backwards anyway
-You can set the frame per second(fps) on the Viewer software. Stock settings are 15fps interior and exterior. Funny thing is Lorex designed a "Impact" mode, where it will go to 30fps, when "Impact"(big bumps, car hit, etc.)occurs. So.....the point of this would be to record at high fps "after" an "Impact" ... hilarious. Just set the normal fps to 30, it will drain your SD Class 6 card space a bit,(comes with 4GB card and memory card reader-if your pc doesn't have one) but if you can spend 80 bucks for a 32gb card(that's the max), it should record more.
But it shouldn't matter, as it has a Overwrite mode - basically write over old data automatically - but there are some people that would want to save everything.
-Another HILARIOUS thing is - there's an Emergency button(comes with extension too, so you can place it on your steering wheel, etc) that when pressed it will start recording at 30fps. So your driving and all of sudden your spider sense kicks in "there must be an Emergency coming!" , take the few precious seconds, reach for the button(placing the extension on your steering wheel will save you 2 seconds!), and EMERGENCY MODE time!!! ok.............
-Finding the perfect angle for the frontal camera is ultimately the hardest, as the front camera, though adjustable, has such a weird adjustment range. The design flaw is that it allow more adjustment toward the dash - not toward the windshield- a big big flaw. It should have been reversed.
-Ultimately the hardest part is finding the perfect spot to place it, because your rearview mirror generally gets in the way. I found a way to place it behind the rearview mirror, but my rearview mirror is forever stuck at night mode.(facing down) So this could be something to dink about b4 buying. Every car is different, so recommendation is to try it for 30 days - if it doesn't fit right, or you don't like it just return it.
